Short: Mama

Angus August 20, 2012 0

Sadly, this short marks the end of our ‘Shorts Week’ which has truly been a lot of fun and we hope you’ve enjoyed every article that has been written. To round off an intense week, I felt you deserved a nice calming short film… I kid, I don’t want the intensity to fade so here we have a gorgeous Horror short film, surely to keep you up at night!

Mama, directed by Andy Muschietti may sound warm and lovely but it is truly the opposite. It’s a story about two children who live in a house with a devilish mother. It’s very short, coming in at over 3 minutes, but it so fantastically delivers a creepy and chilling experience that you won’t forget. Through the use of demonic like CGI, ‘Mama’ makes ‘The Shining’ look like an episode of the Teletubbies. [over exaggerated]

Beautifully executed in what looks to be one long smooth shot, ‘Mama’  cleverly plays on values we associate with nurturing; manipulating us into a false sense of security. It begins with simple humour between two siblings and slowly builds tension like no other short film. Next time you hear conventional cooking noises at your mother’s house, you’ll certainly think twice about investigating…

Check out ‘Mama’ below and let us know how scary you found it.
