The 69th Golden Globes was a night of huge surprises for movies. Martin Scorsese took home the prize for Best Director for Hugo, proving that the visual artistry of the film was not a work of modern movie technology by Scorsese’s masterful, skilled direction. The two Best Pictures weren’t a surprise, lining up with our predictions. Alexander Payne’s The Descendants took the prize home for Best Drama, as well as lead star George Clooney, and The Artist for Best Comedy/Musical, Uggie the Dog with commanding stage presence. There was some upset in the Best Actress category, Meryl Streep taking home the globe once again over Viola Davis, widely quoted as the frontrunner. Michelle Williams wasn’t a surprise, taking the gold for Best Actress in a Musical/Comedy for her role in My Week with Marilyn. Steven Spielberg’s The Adventures of Tintin took home Best Animated film over Rango- besides a few big surprises, the rest of the categories were affirmed as locks tonight, with Christopher Plummer and Octavia Spencer winning in their respective supporting actor categories.
